Drift River Terminal, Cook Inlet

The Drift River oil terminal was built at the base of Mount Redoubt near Cook Inlet, Alaska. When the volcano erupted on December 14, 1989 the terminal was jeopardized by lahar (volcanic ash and mud) flows. A 747 flew through the ash cloud and all 4 engines failed. Read more here and here.
