Scammon Bay is a small village on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta named after Charles M. Scammon, a whaler in the mid-1800's. Scammon discovered the grey whale nursery lagoons on the Baja Peninsula (Scammon’s Lagoon) that led to the near extinction of the species. He later worked for the Western Union Telegraph Expedition that attempted to establish a telegraph link between North America and Europe. He wrote several books including The Marine Mammals of the North-Western Coast of North America (1874). Read more here and here. Click here to download the CoastView app and explore Scammon Bay.
